My interview was pretty standard for a person of my age (I was 17 at the time). There was a set of three tasks: one) to build a tower onto which one could balance a marker pen – sounds childish but it was more the vocal aspect they were looking for and the social side they loved – it divided the active “go-getters” like myself and the shy ones blending into the background of the teams; two) I had to wear the signature orange pinny and approach customers – don’t show any sign of shyness or lack of skill in socialising – they’ll pick up on that and this stage is where many failed; three) I had to sell a product. In front of me were about 10 to 15 different products of which I chose a bird table. You have 10 minutes to study it and then ‘sell’ it to a manager. They look for sales technique, pretty standard stuff. I succeeded and received the highest marks of my group and it was down to avoiding being shy and just making people aware of how active and ready you are. I’ve now been at B&Q for over a year, have transferred from one store to another and have worked in three different departments.
